Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Wraps Filming in Hawaii

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 wraps filming in Hawaii, reveals director Jeff Fowler. The hyperkinetic video game Sonic the Hedgehog arrived on Sega Genesis in 1991 to compete with Nintendo’s highly popular Mario Bros. series. The branding worked brilliantly as Sonic launched a whole video game franchise of its own, with spinoff titles still being released to this day.

The popularity of Sonic as a character has of course led to plenty of adaptations in other media over the years, including the usual array of comic books, animated shows and merchandise. The Sonic live-action movie franchise was a relatively late arrival however, the first film not being released until 2020. Starring Jim Carrey as the evil Dr. Robotnik, the eventual Sonic the Hedgehog turned out to be a big box office hit, grossing $319 million worldwide. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was then announced in 2020 and went before cameras in early 2021 with Sonic 1 director Fowler back at the helm and Carrey also returning as Robotnik

Fowler himself indeed revealed back in May that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had wrapped up filming in Vancouver. Now another production milestone has been reached, as Fowler just tweeted that filming in Hawaii has also wrapped. See his post in the space below:

The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie certainly pleased fans, as was confirmed by its box office numbers. The second Sonic may be an even more fan-friendly film as it’s confirmed the movie will feature an expanded appearance by Miles “Tails” Prower, who had only a cameo in the first film, while introducing Knuckles the Echidna. It was also recently revealed that Criminal Minds star Shemar Moore had joined the cast in an undisclosed role. The cast also includes a returning James Marsden as Tom Wachowski and of course Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.

Storywise Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set to delve even deeper into Sonic lore with a plot revolving around Knuckles and Dr. Robotnik’s search for the Chaos Emeralds. It remains to be seen if Sonic 2 manages to surpass the first film in box office returns, but it certainly seems set up for success given Carrey’s return, the addition of more fan-favorite characters from the original games and the inclusion of the Chaos Emerald angle. The original Sonic movie was of course something of a gamble as no one knew whether audiences would embrace a movie based on the Sonic character. Now that the brand has been proven viable on the big screen, the time is right for an expansion of the universe with Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Each new announcement indeed increases fan excitement for what the second film has in store.
